Waves & Surf Conditions in Cancun
Yes, you can absolutely surf in Cancun! While the waves are generally smaller than classic breaks, our beach break at the Hotel Zone offers soft, rolling surf perfect for beginners and fun for intermediates. Gear and instruction available.
Cancun has surfable waves almost all year long. After 25 years of being based here, I’d say you can catch waves at least 300 days a year. We check the forecast daily to make sure your lesson lines up with the best possible conditions.
The average wave height in Cancun ranges from 2 to 3 feet—perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers. The mellow beach break allows for consistent learning without the intimidation of larger surf. Every now and then we get bigger swells for advanced surfers to shred and get gnarly.
Cancun’s Hotel Zone—locally known as the ‘Zona Hotelera’—offers consistent surf from Km 9 at Punta Cancun (by Hotel Krystal) all the way to Km 21.5 at Punta Nizuc. If you're staying along this stretch, the waves are often breaking right behind your hotel.
The best beaches to surf in Cancun are Playa Chac Mool, Playa Gaviota Azul, Playa Marlin, and Playa Delfines.

Surfing in The Mayan Riviera
Surfing in Playa del Carmen is possible, but only on rare occasions. The coastline in Playa del Carmen sits inside reef-protected waters, which block most swells and leave the ocean flat or choppy. Surf conditions here are wind-driven, highly inconsistent, and rarely strong enough for reliable surf sessions. When wind and swell line up just right, the spot known as El Muelle can sometimes produce a small surfable wave, but this is the exception rather than the rule. On most days, Playa del Carmen is better suited for calm-water activities like paddleboarding. For consistent surf and dependable surf lessons, Cancún’s Hotel Zone about an hour north is the closest destination.
Surfing in Tulum is rare and very inconsistent. Fringing reefs and the coastal shelf block much of the swell, so waves are usually wind-driven chop rather than clean, rideable surf. On occasional strong easterly or northeasterly wind events you may see a small windswell, but it is not reliable. For consistent surf, the Cancún Hotel Zone offers the nearest dependable beach breaks.
Yes, you can surf in Puerto Aventuras, although conditions can be inconsistent — it can be great for beginners when the waves show up. Most days the water is calm, but during the winter months north and east swells can reach the coast and create small, rideable waves. The main local surf spot is a shallow, rocky point-break reef near town that produces a left-breaking wave. On the best days with an East/Northeast swell and West or light winds, waves can reach about 1–3 feet, offering fun rides for beginner and intermediate surfers. Caution is important, as the wave breaks over shallow reef. For travelers, the best way to experience surfing here is with Nohoch Surf School, the trusted local surf authority in Puerto Aventuras. Founded and run by Joe — a passionate surfer and respected ambassador of the sport — Nohoch offers private surf lessons, family-friendly instruction for kids and adults, and quality board rentals ranging from beginner soft tops to performance shortboards. Joe and his team are CPR & First Aid certified, combining safety with unmatched local expertise. To learn more or reserve a lesson, visit www.nohochsurf.com
Yes, but only on the eastern, unprotected side of Cozumel. Unlike the calm, sheltered west coast where the ferries dock, Cozumel’s east side is wide open to the Caribbean Sea and directly exposed to incoming swells. This makes it one of the few places in the Riviera Maya where you can find real surfable waves. When strong east or northeast swells combine with light or offshore winds, the beaches on the east coast — like Punta Morena, Playa Bonita, or Chen Río — can deliver fun sessions in the 2–4 ft range, with bigger sets during winter cold fronts (Nortes) or hurricane season. Conditions, however, are inconsistent and can be rough. The waves break over reef and sand mixes, currents can be strong, and the lack of natural shelter means the surf is fully exposed to weather and wind. Because of this, Cozumel is best suited for surfers with at least some experience, although smaller days can be approachable for beginners. Getting there requires a ferry from Playa del Carmen and transportation across the island to reach the east coast beaches. Compared to Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Cozumel stands out. Reefs block most waves in both towns, while Cozumel’s east coast is directly exposed to Caribbean swells, giving it the best — though still inconsistent — surf potential.
